URBA

FINALIST in Arts & Entertainment Category

Kelowna Chamber Business Excellence Awards

URBA has been selected as a Finalist in the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce 2021 Business Excellence Awards in the Arts & Entertainment Category!

The entry focused on the Uptown Mural Project which is managed by URBA. Now in its third year, URBA’s Uptown Mural Project, now boasts 18 world class street art murals located throughout Rutland’s community centre. The mission of the project is to democratize art and revitalize the urban landscape while supporting and improving the economic, cultural and social vitality of Rutland.

By creating exciting and energetic works of public art, URBA is transforming Rutland into dynamic open-air art galleries. This urban art initiative, unique to the Okanagan, is driven towards the beautification of Rutland, encourages community involvement and strengthens community pride. It emphasizes that Rutland is a safe and desirable place to conduct business with vision and values reflected in each of the murals. By increasing the beautification and walkability of Rutland, the murals decrease vandalism, graffiti and tagging.

The Uptown Mural Project is designed to educate and inspire youth and contribute to their sense of community and ownership of place. Rutland residents, young and old, can mix and mingle with tourists, business owners and local professionals while respecting social distancing – art contributes significantly to quality of life and brings the community together even when we’re apart. This dynamic collection of street art has been inspirational to the people of the Okanagan Valley with the city of Kelowna proud to present it as a key component of the city’s public art collection. World renown artists hail from Montreal, Toronto, Victoria, Vancouver and most notably the Okanagan, including Syilx and Metis artists.
